Anson Dorrance gets 1000th win for UNC, but is he better than Jordan?

Big time congratulations to UNC Women’s Soccer coach Anson Dorrance for winning his 1000th game as UNC’s resident Gaffer, after the Tarheels 2-0 over the Ohio State Buckeyes. He now lives among some of sports biggest icons to eclipse a thousand wins, including Geno Auriemma, Greg Popovich, Coach K, and Wilt Chamberlain (allegedly). Now we all know that achieving such an accomplishment isn’t easy. Imagine being in Anson’s shoes. How can a man sleep easy at night when year-after-year your world class talent is sucked away from you by the NWSL draft, European team offers, or graduation? How can one ever build a winning formula with such players like, Kristine Lilly, Mia Hamm, Tobin Heath, Meghan Klingenberg, and more? Anson has had to make do with what he was given, and he’s won a piece of silverware or two in the process. It’s safe to say that although his teams are always competing trophies, and are always among the best teams in America regardless of sport, he could learn a thing or two about his Ties. (Tie game be weak.)

It really is awesome to see people with really weird names achieve big things. Names like Dick Butkus, Misty Hyman, Metta World Peace, Lebron Blames, and now Anson Dorrance. Its funny the way this world works, one minute your coaching women’s soccer, the next your exploiting your student athlete by stamping their face on your book cover. NCAA in a nutshell.

All JOKES aside, what Anson has done in his long stint as a very very VERY successful coach is every bit extraordinary. It’s incredible to see the huge print he’s had not only at North Carolina, but also for soccer in the US. I hope the UNC woman’s team the best of luck this season. (but if I’m being honest, they don’t really need luck with the talent on that squad and oh btw 21-time NCAA championship Coach at the bench).
