I got to be honest with you all. I’m a football addict. As much as I love soccer, nothing, and I truly mean NOTHING can compare to SuperBowl Sunday. Yes, it sucks that the MLS is not at that level, nor do I expect it to be at that level with Garber at the lead anytime soon. At least for everyone in America (until the USMNT or MEX makes the finals), the World Cup final does not fulfill the excitement that Super Sunday brings to the table. Not so funny, but interesting commercials, exciting game, TONS OF FOOD, drunk uncles arguing, it’s everything you could ever ask for. BUT… alongside millions of others, I can admit that this Super Sunday stunk big time. Apart from stuffing my face with wings, beer, and pizza, it was the product on television that stunk out loud. But as I scrolled through Twitter looking for pictures of shirtless Adam Levine, I got people trying to compare the attendance numbers for the game yesterday and the MLS cup final in December. Yes, MLS cup may have had a slightly bigger attendance number, how dumb do you have to be to think that this in any way is a win for the MLS. I’m also not a total moron. It shows how fantastic that Atlanta United has done in creating this gigantic atmosphere for building the soccer brand in the ATL. It’s probably not a stretch to say that #ATLUTD is Atlanta’s 2nd favorite team. However, as much as Atlanta has done strides in creating that atmosphere, I would say the rest of the league, not so much. On Twitter alone, Atlanta has almost 500K more followers than the 2nd most followed team, the Sounders. So while yes, the MLS Cup out attended the Super Bowl, I would say that there’s an asterisk that comes with it, also probably not as many people wanted to watch Maroon 5 and Travis Scott and passed on a ticket. So where does it leave us? Believe me, I as much as anyone wants the MLS to be a Globally recognized league, with attendance numbers across the league keeping up with the rest of the major sports leagues in the US. Was yesterday’s attendance number something we can brag about? NO!! And another thing. I saw a few tweets about NFL having to be concerned about yesterdays game. News flash folks, the NFL got a truckload of money yesterday. Not only did hundreds of millions across the globe continue to watch a 3-0 game heading into the second half, but they also pleasantly watched the rest of the game with actual hope of a ball game spilling out. Oh, and painfully sat through the commercials with the hope of an actual good commercial making an appearance. Well, let me tell you, the commercials stunk as much as the Rams offense did yesterday. AND YET hundreds of millions still watched!
So to all my MLS guys and gals, let’s stay humble because this was no victory. Guess what, you’ll never change the mind of idiots that can’t comprehend lower scores. Trying to call out people for calling soccer sucks for low scores, while MILLIONS complain about how shitty the game was for low scoring is NOT A WIN! YOU ARE MAKING THEIR POINT!!! Leave those idiots alone, and re-route your hate to Don Garber and his shitty DP Rule!
