The West Australia– Italy’s former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi finalised his troubled sale of soccer club AC Milan to a Chinese-led consortium in a 1 billion euros deal, the club’s CEO designate Marco Fassone said on Friday. The deal, the biggest Chinese investment in a European club, follows retail giant Suning Commerce Group’s purchase of Inter Milan last year. A Chinese firm also underwrites the media rights to the Serie A.
After years of being the A1 dominant force, Milan has recently found itself finishing 8th, then 10th, 7th, and currently sitting at 6th. It’s been tough, and when you’re the most successful team in Sería A history, you should expect to finish top 3 every year. With the purchase of the team, Milan fans can look to greener grass in the next year or two. The Chinese firm is obligated to invest over 100Million euros to the team. Which means, expect a big time signing this summer. Maybe Zlatan returns, maybe Griezmann, maybe even James or Isco leaves Madrid. So far, Cesc Fábregas is the early favorite after some reports of it, but we’ll see. Should be interesting to see how the new owners will change the team.
With the end of of Silvio Berlusconi, let’s take a look back at what he accomplished as owner.
- 8 Sería A championships
- 1 Copa Italia
- 7 Supercoppa Italiana
- 5 UEFA Champions League’s including last team to win back-to-back
- 1 Club World Cup championship
Though Milan was fantastic throughout Berlusconi’s 31 years, nothing compares to there 2007 UEFA playoff run.
